UNIT 6: Motivation and Emotion
STUDY GUIDE (Click Here)
What drives human behavior? To what extent are we driven by innate instincts based on evolutionary factors? To what extent are behaviors learned through the social environments we're exposed to? These are the fundamental questions of this unit, and of course, of the larger questions surrounding psychology in general. In this unit we'll cover the connections between motive and emotion, general theories on motivation, and specific examples of motivation. To accomplish this we'll introduce psychological research and theories, and apply our knowledge to two case studies, "Hunger" and "Sexual Orientation."
(Day 20) Monday - 1/23/17: The Milgram Experiment
Many of you responded to the survey last week that you were interested in unethical studies in psychology. One such study that garnered criticism was a study conducted on "Obedience" in 1963. The purpose of the study was to try and understand why people are willing to do things that violate personal ethics and morals, if they feel they must be obedient to an authority.
Read about the Milgram Experiment by downloading the document below. As you read, respond to the survey questions.

We'll have some open discussion and do some pre-assessing as a class, in order to identify what we already believe about this question.
