CAPITALISM vs SOCIALISM
Let's take a look at the rise of socialism out of the Industrial Revolution and compare it to the evolving system of capitalism which sits in opposition. Your tasks are to 1. analyze a set of posters looking for rhetoric, 2. read through "Capitalism vs Socialism" and respond to the follow up questions, and 3. Watch the video, "Milton Friedman and Michael Moore" and respond to the follow up questions. Complete all of your work on a google.doc that you can share.
Rhetoric - The use of emotional or logical appeals for the purpose of persuasion.
Pathos - An appeal to emotion. The following posters use pathos in order to convince you of their beliefs (conservative or labor).
TASK 1:
The following rhetorical posters represent differing appeals for both capitalism and socialism. In these posters, capitalism is represented by the "conservative" parties and socialism is represented by the "labor" parties. Both use appeals to pathos in order to persuade their audience. For each poster, identify the pathos being used. What kind of an emotional response is the author trying to get out of you? Your responses should be detailed and specific (2 - 3 sentences for each).

In the video below, Michael Moore brings up a situation in which Ford Automotive was discovered to have intentionally designed a car that was unsafe because the company determined that it would save them money to produce the car in such a way. Moore takes issue with this and uses it as an example to question Friedman's defense of capitalism. After watching the video, answer the questions that follow.
